About Jess

“Before I found out I was pregnant, my only image of birthing women was them lying on their backs, red in the face as they strained to birth their babies. This terrified me.

A friend mentioned hypnobirthing and the more I researched it, the more it appealed. During the course we learnt about the benefits of being active during labour. We discussed a few different birthing positions and watched some hypnobirths. I knew that this was something I wanted to try.

However I didn’t really appreciate how much of a physical marathon labour could be and I was clueless about how to prepare physically when I felt increasingly blooming, tired and overwhelmed.

The majority of my third trimester was spent making the most of putting my feet up, often lying or slumped on the sofa watching Netflix! Little did I know that spending time in these positions wasn’t helping to prepare me for labour, it was also having a detrimental effect on the positioning of my baby. I will never know how much of a contributing factor this was, but my first labour wasn’t the straightforward  idyllic water birth I had hoped for!

Fast forward to just over a year later. I found out I was pregnant again and this time I was determined to do all I could to help myself and my baby have an easier labour.

I spent my pregnancy learning more about active birthing positions, incorporating these into my pregnancy yoga flows to create muscle memory.

I completed a ‘Biomechanics for Birth’ course, which highlighted things to avoid in my day to day life which could be detrimental to baby's position, as well as including some specific exercises to encourage baby into an optimal position.

I was a lot more active throughout my pregnancy, teaching and practicing yoga and walking. (This was also helped by the fact I had little opportunity to sit down, let alone watch Netflix as I was chasing after a toddler!)

The birth of my second daughter was a bit quicker than we anticipated as I gave birth to her standing up in the shower at home!

The additional knowledge I gained during my pregnancy, knowing I was strong and also being in a great upright position gave me all the confidence I needed during this short labour.”
